Southern Alberta Art Gallery
The renovation and expansion of the Southern Alberta Art Gallery is now complete. Grand Opening celebrations coincided with Lethbridge’s Art Walk, Alberta Arts Days and the nation-wide Culture Days from September 17-19, 2010.
This is the first project realized by Arts Re: Building Together, a collaborative initiative of the Allied Arts Council and the City of Lethbridge. The architectural firms of Ferrari Westwood Babits and Savill Group Architecture joined forces to re-imagine the Southern Alberta Art Gallery, and the local construction firm RBG Construction was awarded the project in April 2009.
Features of the expansion and reconfiguration include: a new classroom and library with generous windows onto Galt Gardens, a multi-media/video viewing gallery, as well as the addition of state-of-the-art lighting, sound and projection equipment. More project highlights include: a light-filled gathering space that intersects the building from the two story glass-clad entrance to the windows on the park beyond, and barrier-free access throughout.
This project was realized with generous funding from the City of Lethbridge, and the support of the Province of Alberta and Human Resources and Social Skills Development Canada.
